Maps & Species Lists

The maps below represent the primary habitats used by the obligate bird species included in this year’s State of the Birds report. These maps were created by grouping ecological systems by primary habitat, including aridlands, forests, grasslands, coasts, and inland wetlands. Only primary habitats included in the report are shown here. These maps are based on the USGS-GAP National Land Cover dataset (Version 2; gapanalysis.usgs.gov). Note that all terrestrial habitats on Hawaii, Pacific Island territories, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands were treated as a separate habitat: “islands."

In the tables below, we present the obligate species in each habitat (see our Survey and Analysis Methods) that had sufficient data to be included in the indicator analysis for that habitat. For each species, we include the survey used to obtain long-term trend data, population trend (% change per year since 1968), and the lower and upper credible interval for that trend estimate, based on the hierarchical model analysis. Species and trend estimates in green are those that are significantly increasing (i.e. trend estimate is positive and credible interval does not overlap zero), and those in red represent species that are significantly declining (trend estimate is negative and credible interval does not overlap zero). See Our Approach for more details of methodology.
