Yet this crucial biome is in collapse\u2014and grassland birds are rapidly disappearing\u2014due to conversion for row-crop agriculture, woody-plant invasion, and drought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collaborative grassroots conservation initiatives across the Midwest and Great Plains are leading proactive efforts to defend what\u2019s left of America\u2019s grasslands, and to restore millions of acres through strategic and coordinated conservation planning and delivery at landscape scales.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full featured\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1001\" height=\"700\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.stateofthebirds.org\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Grasslands-circle.png\" alt=\"Grassland birds have had a 43% decline since 1970. Solutions\u2014such as conservation easements, improved grazing practices, and inva\u00adsive-plant removal\u2014also improve groundwater, soil health, and economic resilience for farm communities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-birdpress-simple-list-item article-item\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size remove-margin-bottom\">Obligate Grassland Birds Are in Crisis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>More than half of bird species that depend on grasslands for breeding habitat are in steep decline. Grasslands contain eight Tipping Point species, more than any other terrestrial biome. Mountain Plover, Chestnut-collared Longspur, and Baird\u2019s Sparrow have declined more than 67% in the past 50 years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-birdpress-simple-list-item article-item\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size remove-margin-bottom\">A Roadmap to Creating More Grasslands<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Central Grasslands Roadmap Initiative is an innovative coalition of landowners, government agencies, nonprofit groups, and Indigenous Nations.
